broken pig

It’s the Year of the Pig… According to Chinese Lunar Calendar, it officially starts in February yet, but most non-Chinese have already declared so on January 1.

My high school best friend, Abeth, (short for Elizabeth) is opening a new store in Lingayen, the capital town of Pangasinan. Abeth is an ardent believer of feng shui - you know, the Chinese practice of calibrating your place of dwelling or work to generate good luck and powerful energy. I thought of gifting her with this figurine (shown above) since it’s the year of the pig. I chose these triplets, (they look like they are since they are adhered together, although the middle is much bigger so it must be the mother and the two smaller ones on the sides are the piglets… hehe) so she will be having triple good luck in her new business.

But Lady Luck herself played tricks on me the day I purchased this gift. I placed it carefully in one of those ready made paper gift bags then put it on top of the desk, beside my computer. Then my son, Marco came in to my study/home office. “Mama, can I use your desk?” I was already halfway the door, so without looking back, and rather thoughtlessly - I replied: “Sure, okay.”

Then CRASH! I turned around in panic upon hearing that unmistakable sound. He dropped the wrapped figurine!

I couldn’t speak. I knew for sure it broke. He was dumbfounded as well. I picked up the package, shook it, and heard clanging sounds inside…. yes, it broke.

Without a word, I brought the package in my room. I locked the door. I sat still… and tears rolled down my eyes.

Abeth is a very thoughtful friend. She never fails to give me tokens on Christmas and other special occasions. But unfortunately, I haven’t reciprocated her act because I didn’t quite know what to give her as she seemed to have everything - materially. I took her for granted. And now that at last I have something to give to her………

I heard Marco knock on my door…. “Mama, I’m sorry… I did not intend to break that gift.”

I wiped my tears. There are a lot of figurines out there. I would go out to buy another one.

Eric, oo nga, hindi sinasadya. But I still felt bad, kasi excited ako noon na ibigay ito sa friend ko. Well, comments here are still regarded as spam, all I have to do is recover them from Spamkarma2. Tedious, huh.

Gem, my dear, kung baga sa law, you were acting only as my agent, and I was the principal. So, it’s as if I was the one who bought the figurine myself, because the act of the agent is also the act of the principal, as long as the agent is acting only within the authority allowed him. Ayan, na-indoctrinate pa tuloy kita.. hehehe. I love you baby!
