I would much prefer that he pursued law. He was a debater in college. Political Science and Psychology were his major fields. But alas, music has always been in his heart.
His band, Blazing Bulalakaws was featured on Studio 23 this morning. They played around five tunes throughout the program, filling the lull in between breaks. Towards the end of the show, they were acknowledged. Only the vocalist got the chance to speak in behalf of the band. I saw my son standing behind, beaming… He was obviously very happy.
I let him be now. I won’t insist anymore on what I want him to be. He is young. He needs music to express his restless soul. He is living his life the way he wants. And as long as his feet remain on track, I shall not intervene.
almost every parent wants the best for her/his child. i salute you for letting him do what makes him happy. it is in doing things when you’re happy that you are at your best, di ba?
it is a sad fact though that most parents nowadays impose on their kids what would be ‘beneficial’ for them, which is actually equivalent to monetary benefits. cant blame them. hard times really can induce the desire to gain more. but as my daughter always says, ‘one should not choose nursing becaue of money because they will not be good nurses, and they will not perform their job very well.’
Don’t worry about that at all. He’s happy and he and his band must be very good to be televised like that. I took up music in college much to the consternation of my Dad who wanted me to be a lawyer like him. But guess what? After I graduated from the Conservatory, I went on and took up law and became a lawyer as well. Now, he’s happy and I’m happy.
You are a wise parent! It is not easy to accept but in the end it is their life!
blazing bulalakaws? i think thats the band of some of my elementary classmates from mothergoose.
congratulations!
I have the same sentiments. My son’s passion is also music. And that’s the career he wants to pursue. There was also a time when I thought that he’d be good in another career because he’s also a smart boy. But he wants to be a musician then that’s what he’s gonna be.
laissez faire approach to growing up kids
it’s good you allowed him to do that. let him chart his own destiny as long he’s not led astray…
And I woke up at 5 am to check out his TV performance … hehehe.
Well, they were good and your son’s a talented guitarist, Rhoda. ore power to them
Bing, thanks for your encouraging words. Yes, I guess when our kids are happy,we too are somehow happy.
Sidney, thanks for visiting my humble blog. Yes you’re right, its their life! As long as they are on the right track, the best thing is to just let them be.
Gerwin! Yes, that’s the same group. They all went to school at UPBaguio, then somehow, one of the members left, and so Marco got in. Lek Pamintuan is one of them, you know him?
Niceheart, I know about your son. I have read it in your blog. Cute ng son mo, ha. I love flute and jazz, that’s your son’s music, right? I can listen to flute music the whole day and not get tired of it. My son is more on the rockish side. hehe. When I was in college, someone introduced flutist Dave Valentin to me - but I haven’t come across him since. I’m just hoping one day, I can get across one of his albums.
Toe, really? You took music and law? Which do you practice now, professionally? You are one whole talented gal and it shows in your writings.
Tutubi, (i read at Eric’s blog, he calls you Tito, right?) Yes, I monitor him regularly.. hehe. I know rock is associated with drugs, but I’m 100 percent sure he is not into it. He doesn’t even smoke. And do you that - he still drinks Milo and milk until now? One time, he had friends here at home. They drank beer at the rooftop of our house. Then later, he came down, and was asking me to mix him a glass of milk! Hi hi hi!
Eric, thank you, ha. You know why I asked you to watch, because somehow, it felt good to know that there was someone aside from his family who was watching! Really! And also - because you told me you would want to feature them in your blog - para bang wow! opportunity na ito! Sorry, stage mom here… hehehe..
Yes I will right after seeing them live and my taking pics of them!!!
Any news about upcoming live performances?
They had a gig at Gweilos in Eastwood yesterday, Sat., Jan. 27, Eric. Sayang, I was in Manila too but I didn’t watch coz my kuya was in a hurry to go back to Dagupan.
[…] 2) I have learned more things about my children. My eldest son had a blog two years back and I would read it to know what was inside his ‘rockish’ mind. My daughter also maintained a blog and it helped me discover his adolescent concerns that she found awkward to share with me. […]
Crikey! I never knew Psych and Political Science were Marco’s majors. I always thought it had something to do with the visual arts, graphic design or comp sci.
Hi, Angelo! So you know my son? Naku, bistado na ako ngayon, hehe.
Yup, he is a Psych-Poli Sci major though driven by intense interest, he self studied graphic design. And he has been a geek since a kid…
