Year of the Fire Pig

Lucky pig charms such as one above, abound in stores selling Chinese articles

Store selling Chinese articles

Chinese traditions of celebrating this day have been adopted by many Filipinos so much so that stores of Chinese articles are commonly flocked during this time of the year. Above photo shows such store along Arellano Street in Dagupan City that sells Chinese good luck charms and other effects which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the ones buying and displaying said articles in their homes, offices or business establishments.

Xin Nian Kuai Le!

At last, I got it right, courtesy of Gerwin Co (from his comment in my Year of the Dog entry) – a former student of mine who is now based in Hong Kong.

In my 22 years of involvement with the Filipino-Chinese community in our city of Dagupan, I haven’t really learned the proper way of greeting Happy New Year in Chinese. Apparently, the most popular greeting is “Kung Hei Fat Choi”, but this, I believe, is the Hookien dialect and used only by locals. It is said that when you go to Mandarin-speaking China, Taiwan or Hong Kong and greet them “Kung Hei Fat Choi”, they will just stare at you with bewilderment.

Xin Nian Kuai Le! Happy 2007 Year of the Fire Pig! If only for the sake of believing, let us be like the pig – robust, contented and unaffected.

Here’s wishing one and all a bountiful, healthy and happy Year of the Fire Pig! Cheers!

Hi Rhodora! Our client in Dagupan is a prominent Chinese family there, I’m sure you know them.
Another way we greet each other in the Philippines is “Kiong Hee Si Ni!” which is Fookienese.
Cheers to a great year for all of us! :)

Happy New year to you too :) Same all over the world it seems. Tomorrow Monday, we have a dim-sum at a Chinese restaurant close to the office to celebrate new year. We have a large number of employees at work who are of Chinese origin :) In fact Toronto has the biggest Chinese mall in North America :)

Really, Chateau? Well, if that client of yours have children studying in the local Chinese school here, I’m pretty sure I know them. I taught in that school for 12 years and my daughter is studying there too.

    Niceheart, Verns and Dimaks:

    Happy Year of the Pig!

Did you know that every Filipino, though of no known Chinese descent, has at least 10% Chinese blood in them? This is the result of our ancestors’ trade relations with China since ancient times.
