Okay, ladies and gentlemen. The fear and suspicion that I may have diabetes - (Remains to be confirmed when hubby comes home from Manila; I need him to accompany me to the doctor since I get nervous with the mere sight of a needle) - has jolted my senses. For the past months, I have been pigging out. With very little exercise, I quickly gained unwanted pounds that made me feel lethargic and lazy. I have been living a sedentary lifestyle. Now it’s time to wake up. I can’t go on living this way. If you look at my daily routine, you will probably sue me before the Court of Health and Fitness:
1) Wake up at 6:30, see the kids off to school;
2) Eat heavy breakfast of any of the following: tapsilog (dried/cured beef with fried rice and egg); or longsilog (sausages, fried rice and egg); or sometimes dasilog (dried fish, fried rice and egg), a mug (not just a cup!) of coffee with sugar and cream and a fruit (or leftover pastries or ice cream if there are any in the fridge) for dessert;
3) Freshen up, shower, tidy up our bedroom and go around the house, picking clutter here and there;
4) Sit in front of the computer at my home office and start net surfing, doing paper works, reports, etc. by 9:00 a.m.
5) Start getting restless by 11:00 a.m., go to the fridge and look for munchies; if none, I just have a cup of coffee with a stick of cigarette to go along;
6) Prepare a quick lunch (for myself and my assistant, as the kids have lunch in school and hubby at work) of easy to prepare dishes like pork chop (previously marinated and kept in fridge, ready to fry or broil), stir fried veggies or raw tomatoes (very rarely), or in most cases, send my office assistant to Jollibee for my fave crispy chicken joy (two pieces, huh);
7) Having had my fill at midday, I take a 15-minute catnap then go back to the pc, or fix some files, answer/make phone calls and read law books, all of which I do while sitting down;
Off to school at 5:00 p.m. which is the only time I can really stretch my legs for a few meters walk at the campus. (Side note: I am enrolled in a law school… ooopss.. please don’t raise eyebrows.. I don’t really intend to be a lawyer. Too late for that ambition… I just want to learn, know the law, polish, sharpen my mind. I don’t want my mind to go idle and rust up.)
9) Attend class from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., so I sit down again for three straight hours in an airconditioned classroom. After class, sometimes I join my classmates and eat out. Other times, I go home and have heavy, late dinner.
10) Done with dinner, I watch TV for about an hour before going back to the computer for blogging time. It is usually during this time that hubby comes home, often with some hard to resist pastries for ‘pasalubong’
That’s it! That is my “killer day to day routine”.
I still want to live longer. Therefore, I am going to change my lifestyle - drastically if needed be. And I am starting RIGHT NOW! My diet from now on shall consist mainly of the following:
Whole Wheat Bread - My daily bread from now on;
No, not all of that, of course - just one piece (or even half) for every meal;
Veggies, veggies, and more veggies
Fruits - just one or two of these, or half a banana, half an apple or grape fruit
And for a starter - I had this for brunch today. In the next days, instead of egg, I may just have fish or a slice of broiled lean meat or a chicken leg without the skin and a spoonful of peanut butter for the bread. This brunch I had this morning went along with a cup of creamed but SUGARLESS coffee. And, I never lit a single cigarette during the day. Please, give me a congratulatory pat!
For dinner tonight, I am cooking “ginisang ampalaya” (bittermelon) with pork (fats removed) and fish fried in vegetable oil. Then I will cap my day with my daily dose of non-fat milk to nourish my aging bones.AND NEED I SAY, I HAVE ENLISTED FOR MEMBERSHIP IN A FITNESS GYM?

Watch out for the NEW ME! I promise to post BEFORE and AFTER photos here after successfully hurdling my fitness program.

napakalaking GOODLUCK para sayo Tita Rhodes!!!!
hrhrhrhr kakaloka ang eating marathon mo hahahaha. It sounds scary lolz
Seriously I pray na wala kang diabetes. My father has diabetes and it was hard for him to adjust. Talagang pumayat sha sa umpisa. He is doing well now but already insulin dependent. Food is restricted and limited. He exercises everyday too.
Trust all is well and that you have no diabetes at all.
But you know what a NY doctor friend told me? If you have diabetes just cut out all table sugar from your diet and you’ll rid yourself of those insulin shots.
If ever you ever find a local Sugar Anonymous, let me know. I’ll sign up myself.

If you are not obese it’s a plus but nothing wrong when you consult your doctor and have your bloodworks done. It is a MUST do thing really and the ultimate proof. Great that you are conscious about your health. Walking and running to complement your diet is evern better
Good luck Tita!
(:
Good luck to you Tita!
(:
Verns, parang you sound skeptical? Kaya ko ‘to, my dear… hehe.
Diabetic din pala dad mo - so you have to be careful too…
Thank you, Eric.. I really hope and pray I don’t have the disease. Well, I have started cutting out sugar - first, no soft drinks, second, sugarless coffee. And of course, no chocolates and other pastries.. I know you have a sweet tooth too, now, you should join me in my crusade!
Thanks so much for the advice, BW! I am making it an obsession now to improve my health condition and change my unhealthy lifestyle.
Thank you, Kyels!
Good you realized (on time) that you were heading to big trouble!
I recommend Andrew Weil’s book ” 8 weeks to optimal health”.
(You can probably find a copy in Powerbooks)
I didn’t followed all his advice but I feel much better now. I already lost 5 kg!
Hope you don’t have diabetes!
Hi Rhodora! I’ve been trying to lose weight too, started 3 weeks ago. So far, 4 lbs lost. But the best is that my carbo cravings have been greatly reduced. And I’ve never eaten more veggies and fruits in my life than now, hehe.
I agree, let’s do it for our health.
So, good luck to us! we can do it!
Sidney, thanks for your advice..
Wow! 5kg? Mmm.. let’s do the Math.. 5 kg. x 2.2 lbs. equals 11 lbs. You’ve lost 11 lbs.. now, that’s already something! Congrats!
Chateau.. yes, I read it in your entry at PinoyMomsNetwork about your weight loss crusade.. Why don’t we monitor each other so we can have - sort of support system?
Good luck to both of us! Yes, we can do it!
How about eating oatmeal for breakfast instead? It’a a lot healthier than bread, and better for your heart and digestive system…
Good luck Rhodora! You can do it.
I need to lose weight too… my diet isn’t exactly a model for Shape magazine.
It’s good that you enrolled in law classes. It is good and very helpful to your everyday life if you know something about the law even if you don’t plan to be a lawyer.
Oh, yes, Snglguy… I love oatmeal and will surely alternate it for my whole wheat diet bread. Thanks for reminding!
Thanks, Toe! Well, I don’t really aim to get back to my 24-inch single days waistline.. hehehe. I just want to be healthier. Yup, law school has become my catalyst… keeps my brain at work!
good luck rhodora! you can do it! i, too, love oatmeal for breakfast (oatmeal sweetened with brown sugar and maple syrup), sometimes, yoghurt and banana, other times, low fat cottage cheese and banana.
Thanks for the visit and I have something to say about Diabetis. My doctor just finished with a very thourough bloodworks, including a 2 hours Glucose Tolerance Test and told me I’m bordenline with impaired glucose tolerance.
No medications yet, but if their is no improvement the next round of tests, then maybe. Just told me to avoid too much sugar intake, (pop and donuts) and exercise, which I’m doing becaus of High LDL and BP anyways. But then when I asked my Doctor why this happening, he just looked me straight in the eyes and said, that’s what happening when you’re getting old, but I look in better shape than him..hehe health wise I mean..
Tita Rhodes I’m sorry…didn’t mean to sound skeptical. Narelate ko sa sarili ko na nahihirapan magpapayat
Goodluck
Anyway yes…that’s why I also limit my sugar intake. Runs in the family kasi
Belle, thank you for the encouragement! Oatmeal - yes, aside from being a good breakfast, it’s also a good beauty product and usually used body scrub.. true!
Vic, you know what - I have also seen some doctors who look like they need to be ‘doctored’ as well. And worse, I have seen one who would occasionally go out of his clinic to smoke in the lobby - in full view of patients and visitors going here and there. Nakakawalang gana.
P.S. for Vic - Hope your bloodworks improve in the next check up!
My father has hypertension and is on a low carb no meat diet. so as much as we want to devour meat as possible, we were forced to keep up with his diet… you know Fish, Mussel , squid and Octopus diet… Seafoods.. I hate seafoods… but i still think Octipus that we had for breakfast today is yummy.
You are lucky, Richmond, that you get to eat same diet as your father’s… this way, you get to be healthier as you grow older.
Good luck and congrats for the start up. Its like this: If you want it, get it.. i mean, right now
Wow, Congrats on making this decision to live a healthier life. You are an inspiration.
Having written your goals and broadcasted it to the madlang people makes it even more a challenge diba?
Looking forward to the before and after shots.
all the best!
you are an inspiration to many! and you have really written how you will do it! sheer determination, my dear.
as to schooling, it’s not too late, again, another inspiration. me, i took my MBA only 3 years ago, i graduated last august (ang malas pa, i could not attend it, i had to go to bangladesh for a 2-week assignment).
we are all eagerly awaiting the before and after pictures!
Hi Rhodora
I’m wishing you all the best…
may I suggest green tea (for detox)? and the ball… don’t forget the ball when you do your crunches- good for the back.
We’ll be cheering you on!
Good luck! Please try to add more physical activity in your routine. You will feel good about it as well. It could be a break from the internet and stretch/walk around the neighborhood. Maybe join a gym for yoga, pilates, etc.
Again, good luck!
Dimaks, Leah, Sexy Mom, Pining and Pinayhekmi:
Thank you for all your encouragement. Yes, the reason why I wrote this personal crusade in my blog is for the challenge. I wanted to challenge myself. Knowing that there are other people who are aware of my fitness program will surely keep me always on my toes, to really fight with determination. Kahiya naman kung - isinulat sulat ko pa dito, and then, hindi ko rin ma -achieve!
Pinayhekmi… thanks for the suggestion. I have enrolled in a gym.. Eto masakit ang balakang ko ngayon sa workout.. LOL!
you’ll never go wrong with a healthy lifestyle. another suggestion, eat big, heavy (or however we may call it, basta malaki hehe) sa breakfast and then your usual meryenda (sana wala masyadong sugar/fats) and lunch. sa dinner, eat bread or oatmeal (yes sa gabi!!) with honey and banana. partner that with your regular gym sessions, voila! sexy mom! (oops, pahiram ha sexy mom :)).
Thanks for the advice, Zherwin! I don’t really aim to be sexy, I just want to be healthy.. Bonus point na lang siguro ang pagiging sexy.
