Carrot juice regimen

Today, I decided to go back to my carrot juice regimen. To give it some variation, I added an apple to my usual four carrots dose.

Carrots and apple

Four carrots and one apple equals apple-carrot juice!

juicer

Old but still reliable juicer

After scrubbing and washing the carrots thoroughly, I sliced them in thin pieces along with the apple. Then to the juicer they went.

As can be seen, my juicer is old and had seen better days. In fact, some of its parts are already broken.  I bought it for only Php800 ($17) in 1998. Right now, I am wanting to have one of those power juicers advertised on TV because I am impressed at how it can accommodate whole fruits and veggies with no need for slicing. Also, it is so powerful it can yield more juice than this old juicer of mine. The price, however, is, well – affordable if you really want it… around P10-12K ($200-250).

carrot juice

The finished product.

carrot juice

Apple-carrot juice – ready for drinking!

Believe me, I gulped this down in just five minutes. LOL! I just wanted just get over it. Sometimes, carrot juice, when taken plain without sweeteners or any add-ons is not so pleasant tasting. Well, by adding the apple, the taste did improve a lot, although a bit on the sour side. Hmmm.. I wonder what other fruits I can add to my carrot juice.

There is no doubt you and I know about the benefits of carrots. Talk about betacarotene. I guess this is an overrun topic. However, I tried to search for more of this veggie, and look what I found: :)
Benefits of Carrots:

1) A single carrot will supply all your vitamin A needs for the whole day. It’s also a great food to nibble, being a much healthier pastime than grazing on potato chips. Research has also shown that this vegetable has a protective effect against ultraviolet light ( in other words they will help you look younger, longer). Chinese medical practitioners recommend eating carrots to give your liver more energy.Note: eating excessive amount of carrots may cause the skin to yellow temporarily (this is considered harmless, just reduce your intake). Also, the carrot seeds are a nerve tonic and will induce abortion. So, reduce the amount or avoid it during pregnancy.2) Carrot is energizing and antiseptic

3) Eating carrots will encourage healthy skin, hair, bones, eyesight and will also cleanse the body

3. Another benefit of carrot is on people with heart problem. It is believed that carrot may reduce risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer

4) Fresh carrot juice will relieve you from stress, fatigue and will cleanse and energize the body

5) Carrot soup is a home remedy for diarrhea because it calms the bowel and slows down bacterial development.

6) Raw or grated carrots can be used for wounds, cuts and inflammation.

wow, i can’t remember the last time i had a carrot juice because, as you also say it, it doesn’t have a very appetizing taste.

did you add water on them? maybe you could add a gelatin or a coconut milk or even some mango bits?

Zherwin, no water. What you see in the glass is pure apple and carrot juice.

I guess one trick to make it more appetizing is by cooling it for a while in the fridge before drinking. Adding mango bits, I think, is fine. I have tried it many times before. Problem however, is – mango has lots of calories! Sira ang diet… hehehe.

    Hi Rhodora,

Your post really brought back a lot of fond memories of my wife. My Mom-in-law made it a point to mix her a glass of carrot-apple juice everyday because she, like you, believed in it’s health advantages. M grew sick of the juice, actually – calling it “crapple” – but not wanting to disappoint her Mom, she, the trouper that she was, was always game for a glass.

    Thanks for reminding me. =)

    Hi, Houseband00!

Yes, it can be sickening when taken daily. But I want to revive this habit because it makes me feel good. I think carrots are also good detoxifying agents, and with the ‘meaty’ diet that we have at home, it’s a good way to cleanse the system.

Glad I have somewhat brought back some fond memories of M through this post. Thanks for dropping by… :)

Nice healthy drink you got there. Adding other fruits would be nice. How about a spoon of honey, would that be too much sweet? :)

rhodora, i am also currently taking carrot juice but it is a store bought variety. It is not from concentrate, though. I take it every single day for my lunch and some raw nuts in between. the kind that i drink is actually tasty.

we have a carrot juicer that we bought 7 years ago that for $400. it is a good kind but the “pusher” that is made of wood wears out over time. i need a replacement badly. carrot and apple are good combination. i also like to add beets, celery, and cucumber. the taste is bearable and it does make you feel good.

what about adding a baby coconut in your diet? you have tons of those there. sometimes, that is all i have for dinner including its juice, of course.

oh, thanks for your interest in the interview me meme. i will send you the questions once I formulated it.

Carrot juice and raw nuts, Belle? No wonder you have such great figure! :)

I love coconuts too. Problem is, sometimes the vendor would give old, and hard fruits, instead of the baby ones.

Thanks, I will look forward to the interview me meme. :)

I have read most recently how eating carrots or taking in its juice is the healthy way to do these days and it has wonder results…Knowing how a little bitter carrots are, I think it’s better to come up with mixed juice condiment and like you did is just the way to go…

Actually, I never previously felt the need for a juicer; maybe I’d be window shopping for one this afternoon and see if some are reasonably affordable…

    Hi Rhodora!
Looks like its an all-out-war against the flab raging over there! hehehe. I like this combination too, but I buy it ready-made at the gym (i ask them to lessen the sweetener by half). Maybe I should buy a juicer too and have these veg-n-fruit juices for breakfast.
Keep going with the weight loss! :)

I remember when I got a juicer. I was very much into it until the washing part of the machines’ various pieces eventually got to me.

Here in Manila, I get mango and banana cocktail at Fruitas, but very sweet. However, I don’t havr to wash anything afterwards.

Verns, carrot juice can taste good when mixed with fruits. I tried doing it with mango, but then, mango is a caloric fruit! So, plain carrots na lang. :)

Anna, thanks for the interview me meme… I will do it as soon as I recover from a heartache… No, not a lovers’ heartache… too old for that.. hehehe. It’s just that my daughter is now in Manila and I was crying throughout our long drive from Manila to Dagupan yesterday…. couldn’t help it. It hurts to be separated from my one and only daughter and bunso. It’s a different set up for me now this opening of school – I won’t be able to see her off for school every morning…. Ayan, naiiyak na naman ako… :(

    Eric, tamad ka, ha…. LOL!

But you are right – the washing of parts can get to you. Not only that, you have to dry them too before storing the machine away. I don’t have to do this too often though, because I use my juicer only once in two days. Pag mga anak ko ang gumamit, bahala din silang maghugas! :D

We also have a juicer in the house – but after trying it out for a few times, I just gave up and now resort to buying vegetable juice at the supermarket. I particularly like the Kagome brand – a nice blend of vegetables and fruits. Mas mabilis kesa gagawa pa ako. Baka dapat uminom ako ng concoction na gamot para sa katamaran, heheh. :)
